By fibre
Fibre decides how a carpet feels, how it wears and what it costs. Start here if you are weighing one against another.
The natural one. Warm underfoot, naturally flame retardant, resists soiling without a chemical treatment.
The workhorse. Solution dyed nylon holds its colour in a sunny room and takes a clean without going pale.
Soft and stain resistant. A good middle ground for a house with children and a budget.
Soft and affordable. Best in bedrooms and lounges rather than a hallway that gets hammered.
Worth knowing
Carpet absorbs sound instead of bouncing it. In a two storey house or a room with hard walls it is the difference between living there and listening to it.
A carpet with a good underlay holds warmth in winter and stays cool in summer. It is the floor you notice with bare feet on a cold morning.
Bedrooms, stairs and kids’ rooms. Carpet has grip and it has give, which is exactly what you want in those three places.
Most rooms fit inside a four metre width, so a lot of jobs come out with no seam at all in the main living space.
